Prompt List

Characteristics of a President
What are the most important characteristics for a president to have?  The U.S. Constitution states that the President of the United States must be at least 35 years old and have been born in the United States.
But there are obviously other requirements that a president must meet. In a detailed essay, describe the qualities that are needed in a president of the United States that can make him or her successful.

Changes the Next President Should Make
In 2008, the Democratic Party made history by being the first national political party to nominate an African American to be its Presidential candidate.  This historic choice underscores one of the central themes of Barack Obama's candidacy, which is "Change."  Indeed, the need for "change" is a frequent rallying cry of politicians vying for votes in national elections.  What advice would you provide to a candidate, who wants to implement changes, to help him or her run an effective and successful campaign?
In a well-organized essay, considering the current condition of the nation, persuade a candidate to make an important change.  Be sure to support your position with examples and reasons drawn from your studies and observations.

Society's Biggest Problem
In our society we face a number of problems, such as crime, poverty, and pollution.  What do you think is the biggest problem we face in our society today, and why is it a serious issue?
Write an essay explaining the issue or problem you have chosen and why it is having such a negative effect on our society.

Advice to a Presidential Candidate
As the U.S. Presidential election season heats up, the voices of America's diverse citizenry cry out, expressing the people's needs, opinions, and visions for the future.  In the midst of all these competing voices, the Presidential candidates have to carefully consider what they say in return.  Imagine that you have the opportunity to speak privately to the candidate of your choice before he or she makes an important speech.  What would you tell him or her to say to America?
In a multi-paragraph essay, discuss the advice you would give to a presidential candidate on a speech to be made to the American public.  Include facts and details to support your discussion.

Olive Vista's Mock Election
Last week, Olive Vista conducted a mock election.  Students from all over the state of California participated in the same mock election.  We reviewed the results and compared Olive Vista's results with those from other students in the state.

Describe the process you went through in your history class.  Remember to include any class discussions, the voting process, and your thoughts upon hearing the results.  You may also want to include any opinions you have or had about the candidates and/or the propositions.
